FEB 2010 :
Chennai Airport is being modernized and expanded at a faster pace...Addition of extra check in counters, elevator/escalator facilities to boarding area,duty free shops with a good collection and a decent waiting area before boarding.As i hear, the runways are also being expanded and extended to handle ever increasing air traffic.

Good going !,But i am peeved at the condition of the TOILETS at both International and Domestic airports. That place reeks of cigarettes and the smell is so rancid that a first time visitor would just faint there :-(. The toilets there needs to be well ventilated and needs immediate attention,or else, this would top The Incredible India's list .

ACER ASPIRE 5534

Bought this 5534 during cyber week sales at Best Buy - $ 400 for 4 GB RAM and 320 GB Memory.
I thought this is one cool budget notebook for chatting and basic everyday usage.
Guess what happened...I sensed trouble right off the box. The computer would not boot up,and it took at least two tries for start up.And once i clicked IE, the screen started flickering and would not stop. The integrated webcam did not work either. I called the ACER support ,only to be answered by Pratap Reddy and i was told to use erecovery to configure to default factory settings. Its a new laptop and it needs to be reconfigured ?! Can't believe their advice !
I didn't want to sit and spend hours on reconfiguring the "new laptop"..
I just took it back to Best Buy and returned it.No questions asked. I've purchased another brand now, and hope it works !

Problems problems- 12/4/2009
Returned 12/5/2009.

Okay.

But , Pritish Nandy has some harsh words for Dr.Venki.

Here are his twitter outrages on Dr.Venki

1.Win a Nobel and you think you are God. No one should attempt to access you, not even people who knew you once. Silly n arrogant.

2.Indians may have over reacted in their enthusiasm to wish him for winning the Nobel. But thats no reason to be so ugly n shirty.

3.Venkatraman Radhakrishnan may be a Nobel Prize winner but his reaction to Indians congratulating him is disgusting. Have some grace, man.

Alright ! Here are my observations on Pritish Nandy's comments .

1.Pritish is so naive that he never realized Dr.Venki is an American citizen and not otherwise.
2.Pritish has TV shows every week honoring Indians scientists and researchers and thus has the right to ridicule Dr.Venki
3.Pritish was a Rajya Sabha MP which is considered a back door entrance to Indian Parliament , unlike Dr.Venki who won his Nobel prize based on his research and hard work.
4.Indians have over reacted in their enthusiasm that they forgot to send congratulatory notes to other Nobel laureates /Winners
5.Indians have over reacted in their enthusiasm as they had flooded ISRO scientists inbox's on their once successful Chandrayaan mission
6.Indians have over reacted in their enthusiasm that they eulogize cricket over other sports and they easily forget that Hockey is their national game
7.Indians have over reacted in their enthusiasm because they are instantly connected to a nobel winning brown man with 23 syllables
8.Indians have over reacted in their enthusiasm because it is easy for them to send an email to Dr.Venki than sending a hand written note via snail mail
9.Indians have over reacted in their enthusiasm because they love spams to their personal email accounts
10. Pritish Nandy ,himself a Karmaveer Puraskaar Noble Laureate [ 2008 ] is plain silly and arrogant that he was not awarded the original Nobel :-\

SLUMDOG WHAT ??

You know this movie has received many awards including Golden Globes and Oscars. The two child actors [Rubina-Azhar]casted in the movie are from the slums of Mumbai.Now,the west has known India better than ever before. As such,many in the west believe that India is a country with mud roads and bullock carts and this movie has done its part to reinforce and renew their beliefs that India is a third/fourth world country with unsuitable living conditions.

Here are my experiences on this movie. Few in my apartment complex has stopped by my house to say a word about this movie as how wonderful and excellent the movie was.I can't comprehend whether there was pity in their tone or an exclamation as how this guy spoke English and came to America ! At my work,i'm the only desi guy. Those colleagues,whom i have never met,stopped by me to say a word about the movie ["I'd never take a flight to Mumbai" ; "Do people really live in those slums there?"].I even had a student ask me about the living conditions in India !

Uh ! How should i react to these people ?. I know there are homeless and tent cities across this country but do i tell them that ? I don't know...Let me know your thoughts !!

2.Asians prefer Asian made autos here in America. Asians buy either Japanese or Korean made cars.

3.I bought a Toyota 3 door lift-back in 2006 when the model was released. My colleagues at work were asking me why i chose to buy a small car when medium and large sizes are available.Talk about savings on the gas & mileage !! Now, a couple of my colleagues have sold their trucks and are driving around in a small car !! Thats the change they wanted !

Gas price drop: Closing in on $3 CNN - OCT 12,2008.

The gas prices here in US has come down significantly in the past couple of months. The cost of gas/gallon averaged at $ 4.70 during july/august 2008 .Currently , the prices average around $3.25 here in Los Angeles area.

Here is my question :-
Why is that the gas/petrol price is always on an upward scale in India whereas the prices are decreasing in this part of the world ?

What’s the Hindi, Telugu, or Punjabi word for “customer service”? You have to think hard about it, right?
U.S. culture requires that we are peppered with greetings, some meaningless, when we enter a store. “Have a nice day” is a hackneyed phrase that seems to have lost sincerity and meaning, but nevertheless it’s reassuring to hear. But enter any Indian business establishment—restaurant, cinema, grocery store—and chances are you won’t even get a cursory “hello” or even “thank-you.” In fact, you often get the feeling upon entering an Indian establishment that you’re trespassing onto personal property like an uninvited guest.

Plastered behind the check-out counters are angry handwritten signs stating: “No Refunds Whatsoever” or “We Reserve the Right to Refuse Service to Anyone”—“anyone” bolded and double underlined.

The monopoly that Indian business establishments enjoy, coupled with increased consumer demand and historic lack of choice, means they can get away with shoddy service and quite frankly unclean, unhygienic, and disorganized stores. Some stores look like their shelves and merchandise haven’t been dusted since the dot.com bubble burst.

We go to Indian stores out of either necessity or because they are cheap, certainly not for the ambience or the experience. Take away the former two factors, and they’d be out of business. Today, with more options available to consumers on the internet as well as western supermarkets stocking more Indian groceries, let’s hope that Indian businesses are forced to focus less on their profits and more on customers.

I have limited my visits to desi establishments ever since this incidence happened to me. Here are few alternatives that i follow :

1.Shopping for vegetables/greens at Oriental stores/local farmers market. They do carry "Indian" vegetables. The vegetables are fresh and worth the price you pay.

2.Rice : From wholesale clubs [BJs/Costco /Sams Club]. They do carry rice varieties imported from India.LOT cheaper than Indian stores.

3.For dhal ,mustard and other condiments,look for nearest Mexican/Latino/Caribbean stores. They do have wider varieties of spices of much better quality.

4 .Indian Restaurants : A BIG NO NO ! SAVE YOUR HEALTH !Treat your taste buds to other cuisines. Vegan/Vegetarian foods are available everywhere.

5.Indian Jewels : These jewelers in Desi areas have a nasty attitude.Few won't even talk to you or show you the jewels until you convince them that you are a potential customer. I prefer middle eastern stores in downtown, Much purer gold and new designs.

6. Indian Doctors : My Indian PCP turned me away for carrying HMO even though he is a part of the medical group.Told me that he prefers PPO. I get better care elsewhere !!

7. Movie theatres : Nasty ! [Worn out chairs/bugs/stinky toilets !] .Also talk about the ticket prices of newly released Indian/Tamil movies compared to Hollywood movies ! I'd rather prefer watching a movie at home via........:-)

8.Indian/Hindu temples :Going to temple on an auspicious day ? Be prepared to be pushed around and jostled by the crowd inside the shrine. I can't understand how our people can stand in line /Queue for at busstop with others but can not maintain the same standards within own community. Also, at a temple,look out for the priest attending phone call to talk to ambi while performing pooja and special dakshina to the priest for performing car pooja. The asking rate now at Malibu temple is atleast 3x$20 which was $20 couple of years ago. I believe HOME IS TEMPLE and if you believe GOD IS ONE,plan a visit to nearest church,buddhist temple or other places of worship.

WHAT ELSE ? Talk about a visit to Indian Embassy,SBI-USA,AIR INDIA...the list goes on and on..... IT IS TIME THAT OUR PEOPLE'S ATTITUDE CHANGE FOR BETTER.
IT IS ALL ABOUT TEACHING A LESSON TO GREEDY INDIAN GROCERS AND BUSINESSES.WILL YOU LISTEN ?

So, i entered 7-eleven store this morning for my coffee and to my surprise ,i saw these interesting election cups !!

The notion is that general public would grab their candidates cup for coffee and their vote gets counted until the election day. I just picked a regular cup for my coffee !

Well, as a legal alien , all that i could do is to follow the election news via these blogs/sites and via television election coverages and ads.

A couple of years ago, I wrote about receiving a monthly wireless bill for USD 307 ! .

Now again, i received a monthly bill for USD 355 as charges for calls that i didnot place. How would it feel to be on call with a customer care representative on a busy work day to have the error[!] rectified ?

NEWS : PDS to supply rice at Re. 1 a kg

I do not know whether the scheme to supply rice at one rupee a kilogram is an appreciable welfare measure by TN govt or yet another political gimmick. All that i know of those urban ration card holders,is that they procure the rice for purposes other than consumption. The rice grains are used to feed crows,sparrows,pigeons, and cooked rice as dog/cat feed and also as arisi kola podi/kola maavu.

Now, here are my questions:-
If the government can afford to ration rice at Re 1 /KG ,why are the other rice varieties cost more at annachi stores and supermarkets ?
Is this rice devoid of any caloric value and other rice has rich nutritional quality ?
Are there any politicians,including our CM use this rice for consumption at their homes?

Here in USA, the cost of rice has increased triple fold in recent months, and a twenty pound bag of rice costs about twenty dollars. Also,Most Indian grocery stores here in CA ran out of sona masoori,ponni varieties and desis are purchasing other brands. The stores report about the ban on rice exports from India.

Recently, i had a billing dispute regarding a purchase and i called my credit card service which ,obviously had a call center in our desiland.It was 2200 hrs PST when i placed the call.
The CSR sally aka shanmugasundari was so irritating and kept on reading some printed stuff and never listened to my side of argument.So, i ended up having a heated conversation with the CSR until i contested my claim and made the CSR understand my situation.

After about 30 minutes, as i was about to hang up, i heard this ending salutation from our CSR:

I have always wanted to watch my favorite episodes shown on National Geographic Channel [NGC] at my leisure. It is not possible for me to watch them during workweek and the weekends too get busy with other chores.

Few months ago,i stumbled upon this article on CNET ,and upon reading that i have opted to watch my favorite shows on my big screen PC for free !!. There are many P2P TV networks ,but i particularly liked JOOST because they carry a variety of full length episodes that were shown on NGC. I : I need to send this package to India.. How many days would it take for international delivery ?

I: The name of this city had been changed a decade ago...Both are same...

I could not find Chennai ,Bengaluru ,Mumbai or Kolkata in the list...The cities were still listed as Madras, Bangalore,Bombay, Calcutta.

Here is my question :-
I understand that the names of these cites has been changed by our honorable politicians to reflect their historical and linguistic relevance. But, when they propose such a name change, do they ever bother about the international effects on such name change? Aren't there international conventions based on which city names are referred to and has our government made efforts to notify the international countries of such a change ?
Chennai airport is still MAA and Mumbai airport-BOM. IS this a false sense of pride that we Indians carry to the international community ? Please share your thoughts !

Hint: A good place to look for change is in the Coinstar machine. Sometimes the machine spits a coin out because it’s foreign, or damaged; sometimes it’s simply overwhelmed and lets some perfectly good specie fall through.
And FYI: so far this year I’ve found $5.24.

This is not a kind of post that i often write on my blogs. Today,I ask for your help.

Sarabesh,a three year old child was born with partial visual impairment (poor vision in one eye) and profound-total hearing impairment on both ears . He was recently diagnosed and his parents were counselled to start a rehab program for him .

This little child would benefit from a surgery known as Cochlear Implant . This is a pretty successful implant but a costly one to afford by the family [A minimum of 700,000 INR is required ]. His father works for a food processing unit, earning about 4000INR PM and his mother, a former house maid. A surgery for his vision is also pending.

At this time, he would benefit from a pair of Strong Class Behind -the-Ear Hearing aids to start the aural rehabilitation process. These hearing aids would cost about 25000 INR.

I appeal to all good hearted souls to offer their help for procurement of his immediate aids.

A group of therapists launch website for child support

FIVE provides parents and the children a comprehensive package
"In our own environment we are defeated when seeking help"

CHENNAI : Paediatricians should be able to diagnose early the delay in developmental milestones so that the child could be referred for early intervention programmes, according to therapists and doctors working with children.

Speakers at a symposium on `ideal service model for children with disabling conditions' held here on Sunday, emphasised that developmental problems could be rectified early if the doctors networked with therapists. The symposium was organised by non-governmental organisation FIVE. It also launched a website www.childsupport.in to provide a platform for parents, teachers, doctors and others associated in the field of child development to share information and support to those involved with children who have specific developmental and/or learning needs.

Since 2005, FIVE has been working with children suffering from developmental disorders, said its director and speech therapist Sowmya.

It provides parents and the children a comprehensive package, including occupational therapy, speech, language and physical therapy after a thorough assessment of their disorder.

Actor Gauthami, who launched the website, said the organisation addressed the concerns that parents had about their child.

Anxiety

"As a mother of a seven-year-old I have lived through the anxiety about my child's growth, looking for resource and finding the right way to help our child."

Often help is available abroad, but "in our own environment we are defeated [when seeking help]" she said.

Paediatricians V.V. Varadarajan and Shanthi Raj spoke on environmental problems that children faced. They urged doctors to spend more time with children with suspected developmental disorders so that these children could be referred early for intervention.
The challenges were the family members who often would not allow the mother to seek therapy.

Though mothers would spot the difference quickly the family members would prefer that she wait but by then it is too late for the child to be mainstreamed the paediatricians explained.
Constantly updating knowledge, keeping abreast of latest development and networking with therapist organisations would help the child ultimately, they further said.

Ah ! Guess what ?! I watched a Kannada movie today K/as Mungaaru Male (First rain) !! I was invited to this movie screened here at Naz Cinemas this afternoon by my friend. I had no options but to accompany him this afternoon to this movie:-( . Inside the hall,so many channagedeera's were heard. Anyways,I had my share of interesting events inside the hall. I was seated next to a 10yr old ABCD boy who,like me doesnot know /or has limited knowledge of Kannada :-).My friend was interpreting this movie for me in English,just like the little boy's mom who was also translating dialogues to him .

This little boy seemed to know little about India. In the first scene,the Hero falls into a Manhole/ sewer and this boy just didnot have an idea of what that was !! He asked his mom about that..whats that mom..and his mom couldnot answer him..

And he was just laughing at all the songs and fights where the Hero dances or trashes a gang single handedly..

I feel Indian movies to desikids here seems like an amusing experience for them! Guess,these kids are just split between two worlds..world of their own experiences and the exposure being provided to them by their parents !

Few months ago,I was listening to a radio talk show by Mr.P.Sainath on India's farm crisis. He spoke at length about the famines in India during the erstwhile British Raj and how poorly they governed the famine crisis especially in Mysore and Madras regions. He quoted a book by Mike Davis which intrigued my interest in learning more about our past. A number of references in that book discussed widely about the famines and their effects on Indian farmers. About 24-29 million people had perished due to famines while the British people enjoyed feasts during that era. It was one of the worst periods in India before Independence.

Now after reading the book, i wonder how different is our present government from the erstwhile rule in handling the sucides of farmers on a large scale due to droughts and famines . Its been more than 60 years after independence and basic infrastructure is still lacking in almost all areas required for basic living .Has this has become the way of life that our rulers now even bother to uplift the downtrodden societies ?

Just thought of this situation : How many of us get to read newspapers in the morning nowadays ?

In this fast paced world, most of us hardly find time to read the newspapers. I,for instance would read the news either on the web /ePaper or listen to radio during the super early drive to work or while watching TV in the evening . But the pleasure of reading newspapers has always been sacrificed.I remember those days back home when i and my family members would wait eagerly for the paper to be delivered in the morning and there would definitely be a fight as who would get to read it first. Each one of us would want their favorite news item to be read ..be it the front page or classifieds or stock market quotes or sports...

Yesterday being Sunday,i got to read the LA times.I can't explain how much i relished those couple of hours i spent on reading the news paper ஒரு வரி விடாம including the supplements,and wading thru' those fliers that came along with the paper.Adding to the excitement was reading the special coverage on World Cup Cricket on this mainstream American newsprint,while sipping bru coffee and Suryan FM being played in the background .That feeling surely was emotional for one who was away from home for a while.

Anyways,i have decided to read papers atleast once a week..அப்ப நீங்க ??

I was shopping at the local supermarket today. Purchased about 5 or 6 items and went to the Express Checkout line. 10 Items or less. In front of me were a couple of mid-to-late twenties Indian women. (I use the word women loosely!)
They were each purchasing and paying for their shit separately.
I noticed that the bitch in front of me had much more than 10 items. I took a quick count, she had sixteen items. That's about sixty percent over the number of allowed items! She then had the gall to leave the line while her friend who was in front of her was being rung-up, to leave the line, get another item (making it 17) and getting back in line in front of me!
I had enough at this point, and told the skanky, fat, smelly Indian bitch that she was very rude, and that this was the express line, and that she had almost double the amount of items allowed. I asked her if she could read, and pointed to the clearly marked sign (10 items or less) clearly posted on top of the register!
The bitch went off on me telling me to "shut up" and to "mind my own business".
This only enraged me further, and I had some choice words for her fat ugly ass!
One of the things that came out of my mouth was "low-life". The bitch then went off as to how "I wish I made as much money as her" and "you wish you had as much education as me".
First of all, I don't understand how the cunt can make that determination, but I told the skink that if she was so educated, she should be able to read the fucking sign! Don't you hate it when a-holes who are clearly in the wrong get so indignant and self-righteous?
It's typical of these f**king Indian bastards! They come here, then have the audacity to think they're better than everyone, and think they are above the decent rules of civility! OOPS...Dinamalar DID IT again !

It looks like Dinamalar photographers/reporters waited clandestinely at various locations to click few pictures of the V-Day occasion.

Those people in the pictures are not celebrities. They are just ordinary people who have come to a public place to celebrate the day.
In my view,this is a total invasion of their privacy and this definitely is not a way to expose them in the front page.

Now i call this a "Creative Journalism" !
